A few months I ago I posted pictures of the caterpillars that I am raising this year. Then I gave you a test. Finally, here are the test answers. The first three are moths, and the last three are butterflies.
Caterpillars A are Tussock Moths and they eat milkweed.
Caterpillar B is a Brown Hooded Owlet and they eat goldenrod and asters.
Caterpillar C is a Saddle Back. It eats Maple and a bunch of weeds. This is the only one that will sting you if touched. I have learned from experience. It hurt! First I thought it was a bee sting, but was glad to find a Saddle back. I forgave it for stinging me.
Caterpillar D is an Eastern Black Swallowtail; it eats anything in the dill family.
Caterpillar E is a Painted Lady and it likes to eat thistle. The caterpillar won’t sting you, but the thistle might poke you.
Caterpillar F is a Monarch. It eats milkweed.
